Today in Habs History: December 9th Edition



1909: The Canadiens name Jack Laviolette as the club’s first coach. They also signed Odie Cleghorn.



1933: Howie Morenz tied Cy Denneny as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, when he picked up the 246th of his career in a 4-2 loss to the visiting New York Rangers.



1954: Rookie goalie Charlie Hodge picked up his first career shutout, in a 2-0 win over the Maple Leafs, at the Forum.


1979: Guy Lafleur extended his team-record consecutive game assist streak to 12 games in a 7-5 loss to the visiting Colorado Rockies. Lafleur scored 15 assists during the 12 game streak, tying the team-record set by Pete Mahovlich.



2011: The Canadiens trade Jaroslav Spacek to the Carolina Hurricanes for Tomas Kaberle.
