1909: The Montreal Canadiens, the "Club de Hockey Canadien" was founded by J. Ambrose O'Brien. Jack Laviolette was named GM, captain and player-coach.

 

 

1934: The Canadiens trade Joe Lamb to the Boston Bruins for cash. On thr same night Armand Mondou scored on a penalty shot against Rangers goalie Andy Aitkenhead. The Canadiens won the game 5-3.

 

 

1943: Bill Durnan extended his NHL record for the longest unbeaten streak by a rookie goalie to 14 straight games (12-0-2) with an 8-2 Candiens win against the Red Wings, in Montreal. Durnan's record stood until Patrick Lalime broke it in 1996-97.

 

Gerry Heffernan scored four goals (the only hat trick of his NHL career) and added an assist to lead the Canadiens’ scoring attack.

 

1957: Jacques Plante and Maple Leafs' Ed Chadwick dueled to a 0-0 scoreless tie, in a game played at Toronto. It was the 29th career shutout for Plante.

 

 

1958: Rookie Ralph Backstrom scored twice in the first period to lead the Canadiens to a 2-2 tie against Toronto, at the Forum.

 

 

1960: Jean Beliveau scored his 11th career hat trick to lead Montreal to a 7-5 win against the Black Hawks, at Chicago.

 

 

1969: Rogie Vachon recorded his 9th career shutout, and Jacques Lemaire scored the only goal in the second period as Montreal won 1-0 at Chicago.

 

 

1971: Rookie goaltender Ken Dryden recorded his third career shutout, Jacques Lemaire scored his second career hat trick and added two assists and Frank Mahovlich picked up four assists as the Canadiens won 7-0 against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

 

 

1983: Claude Lemieux scored his first NHL goal during the Canadiens 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

 

 

2008: Canadiens open Centennial Plaza at Bell Centre on their 99th anniversary.

 

 

2009: Celebrating the club’s Centennial, the Canadiens played the Boston Bruins in a classic Friday night match-up with the Habs recording a 5-1 win. Michael Cammalleri scored his fourth career hat trick (and second of the season).

 

Prior to the game, the Canadiens had a pre-game skate, featuring the Habs greats of the past and retired the jerseys of Hall of Famers Emile “Butch” Bouchard (3) and Elmer Lach (16).
