The Rocket Reaches 500

It was on this day in 1957 that Maurice Richard became the first player in NHL history to reach the 500 goal plateau. Richard’s goal came on the power play at 15:52 of the  first period, during the Canadiens 3-1 win over the Chicago Black Hawks.

Richard reached the milestone in his 863rd NHL game. By comparison, it took Gordie Howe 1045 games to become the second to reach 500 goals in March on 1962.

For more on the historic moment, Red Fisher took a look back in 2007, marking the 50th anniversary of Richard’s goal. Another good read comes from Davis Harper of NHL.com
